Preparing Your Home For Window Replacement
Once the installation day has been scheduled there are some things you can do to make it easier for the installers to work in your home. A little bit of preparation will make the entire process more efficient. Here is what you can do inside your home to prepare:
Clear the Way
When your windows are being replaced, new windows will have to be brought in and old windows we have to be taken out. This is going to create a bit of a mess near your window openings so it is best if you can make a clear path for the installers to use. Remove anything that may make it hard for the installers to bring your windows in and out of your home.
Not only will you need to make a clear path inside your home, but you also need to take a look outside and move anything that may be obstructing access to your windows. This includes toys, furniture, potted plants, decor, and anything else you don’t want to risk getting inadvertently damaged or broken. The installers may need to use ladders and scaffolding to access the exterior part of your upstairs windows so it is important they have ample space to do so.
Take Down Window Treatments
In addition to moving furniture, you will need to remove any window treatments. This includes blinds, drapes, interior shutters, light fixtures, and curtains. Typically, hardware can remain where it is, but if you are unsure just ask the installers prior to their arrival.
It’s also a good idea to remove any wall decorations that are near windows. The window installers will be doing a lot of work around the windows so rather than risk something being knocked down accidentally it’s best to remove and store any photos, mirrors, paintings or other decor before their arrival. Removing floating shelving that is located near the windows is also a good idea.
Cover Your Furniture
Replacing windows can create a bit of a mess inside your home. While the installers will do their best to keep the mess to a minimum it’s a good idea to be proactive about your home and cover your floors and furniture with drop cloths or tarps to protect it from dust and debris.
Deactivate Home Alarm Systems
Since the installers will be in and out of your home for a while you’ll want to turn off your home alarm systems and window alarms to prevent them from being set off while the installers work. If you have a smart doorbell system you may want to mute notifications for a bit since the workers will likely be setting them off repeatedly in a short period of time.
Allow Access
In addition to turning off alarms, you want to make sure that the installers have access to your home, even if you plan to step out for a short period of time. Make sure they won’t get locked out of your home or backyard which will interrupt their work and may prevent them from completing the job. If you do need to leave, be sure to discuss this ahead of time and make a plan for them to gain access to your home.
Kids and Pets
Finally, if you have children or pets in your home it’s important that both are kept out of the work area. If possible try to arrange for children or pets to stay at a friend, family or neighbor’s home during the installation process.
However, if that is not an option be sure to have a plan for a safe place for them to be while your windows are being replaced that is away from the work area. It’s important that you restrict access to the work areas for anyone in your house, but if you do need to access a room they are in, arrange a time that is good for the work crew to stop working briefly to let you in to get what you need.
